Cervical Disc Herniation
The spine consists of vertebrae and the discs between them. It extends from the base of the skull to the tailbone, comprising the cervical (neck), thoracic (mid-back), and lumbar (lower back) regions. The discs act as shock-absorbing cushions against loads placed on the vertebrae.
There are 7 cervical vertebrae and 5 discs in the neck region. A disc consists of an inner nucleus pulposus surrounded by an outer fibrous ring. Cervical disc herniation occurs when the nucleus pulposus protrudes outward and presses on the nerves passing through the spinal canal.

Cervical disc herniation can develop from several different factors affecting the discs in the neck region.
Aging & Degeneration
The natural aging process causes disc degeneration and loss of water content, preventing discs from functioning properly and making them more susceptible to herniation.
Sudden Load & Repetitive Movements
Sudden heavy loads, repetitive strenuous movements, trauma, accidents, or falls are among the primary factors causing the disc to protrude outward.
Non-Ergonomic Posture
Office workers who spend long periods in non-ergonomic positions are at increased risk due to prolonged strain on cervical joints and disc wear.
Symptoms of Cervical Disc Herniation
The primary symptom is pain radiating from the neck to the shoulder blades and from the shoulder joint down to the fingertips. Not all neck pain should be associated with disc herniation. Common symptoms include:
Persistent neck pain.
Pain in the back, shoulder and hand areas.
Numbness or tingling in the affected nerve's distribution area.
Arm and hand weakness in advanced herniations.
Reduced hand control on the affected side.
How is Cervical Disc Herniation Diagnosed?
Patients presenting with suspected cervical disc herniation undergo a thorough evaluation. Physical examination findings and radiological imaging are combined to establish a definitive diagnosis.
Symptom Assessment
Detailed questioning of symptom frequency, duration, and severity specific to each patient.
Physical Examination
Sensory evaluation, muscle strength testing, and reflex assessment.
Radiological Imaging
MRI or CT imaging to confirm the diagnosis and assess the level and degree of herniation.
Personalized Diagnosis
All findings are combined to establish a precise diagnosis and a tailored treatment plan.
Treatment Methods for Cervical Disc Herniation
Treatment methods vary depending on the degree of herniation, patient complaints, and general physical capacity. Treatment must be planned specifically for each patient.
Chiropractic Treatment
Scientifically proven chiropractic care manages pain and restores range of motion by reducing pressure on nerve tissue.
Manual Therapy
Various manual therapy techniques are applied to reduce nerve pressure, relieve pain, and accelerate recovery.
Exercise Therapy
Cervical stretching and strengthening exercises to improve neck mobility and enable more comfortable movement.
Patient Education
Activity modification, posture correction, pain education, stress management, and breathing exercises are key components that enhance treatment effectiveness.
