What is it?

Lumbar Disc Herniation

Our lumbar spine consists of five vertebrae. Between the vertebrae there are flexible discs that act like shock absorbers, allowing us to move comfortably.

Lumbar disc herniation occurs when the discs in the lumbar region — tightly attached to the vertebrae above and below — protrude toward the spinal canal and press on the nerves passing through it.

Causes

Causes of Lumbar Disc Herniation

Lumbar disc herniation is a result of the wear and tear that accumulates in the body over time, and can originate from several different factors.

Aging & Wear

Decreased water content and load-bearing capacity of the discs with age causes them to protrude outward.

Repetitive Movements & Heavy Lifting

Repetitive movements and sudden stress on the disc from heavy lifting are among the primary causes of disc herniation.

Sedentary Lifestyle & Obesity

A sedentary lifestyle and excess weight increase pressure on the lumbar spine, raising the risk of herniation. Poor posture is also a significant risk factor.

Trauma & Smoking

Trauma can trigger a disc herniation. Research has also shown that smoking can impair disc nutrition and contribute to herniation.

Symptoms

Symptoms of Lumbar Disc Herniation

Symptoms may vary from patient to patient depending on the level of herniation. The most commonly observed symptoms are:

Pain radiating from the lower back to the hip and leg.

Numbness or tingling sensation in the legs or feet.

Restricted movement.

Weakness in leg muscles.

Reduced walking distance.

Decreased bladder and bowel control.

Treatment

Treatment Methods for Lumbar Disc Herniation

Effective treatment is planned specifically for each patient. Chiropractic treatment, scientifically proven to be effective, is a successful method for improving pain and functional limitations in patients.

Chiropractic Treatment

Scientifically proven chiropractic care reduces pressure on nerve tissue, successfully improving pain and functional restrictions.

Manual Therapy

Various manual therapy techniques are applied to reduce pressure on nerve tissue and accelerate the healing process.

Personalized Exercise

Patient-specific exercise programs help gain strength and flexibility in the lumbar region, enabling successful non-surgical treatment.

Surgery (When Required)

9 out of 10 patients recover without surgery. Surgery is only necessary for patients with progressive neurological deficits or loss of sphincter control who do not respond to conservative treatment.

Surgery

When is Surgery Required?

9 out of 10 patients with lumbar disc herniation can be treated with non-surgical methods. Surgery is required for patients who do not respond to non-surgical treatment, with rapidly progressing symptoms including severe pain, progressive leg weakness, and loss of bladder or bowel control.

After surgery, a personalized physiotherapy program is needed to strengthen weakened muscles and eliminate functional movement restrictions, with the goal of helping patients safely return to their daily activities.
